AT: BW Shadow Tutorial by xXSapphireGaleXx AT: BW Shadow Tutorial by xXSapphireGaleXx
Check out my other Spriting Tutorials [link] (actually you shouldn't... they're aren't as nice looking as this one :c)

Advanced Tutorials: A mini-series of tutorials of mine going into detail about various Pokemon spriting techniques, like fire, ice, etc. This is the first of this mini-series.

Requested by :iconsomething-memorable:

------------

USE THE ERASER TOOL TO SCRIBBLE OVER THE SPRITE WHEN RECOLORING IT I forgot to mention that :U

I'm getting KH: Birth By Sleep tomorrow so I won't be online for the next 3-4 days as I play that game, so you get this as a tiny parting gift. I'm planning on updating one of my older tuts later on next week (that is, if I'm done with BBS by then... which I probably won't be XD).

Meh, this is how I make my shadows in MS Paint, which in turn are like the battle shadows in Black and White. If you want to do something similar to those, read this tutorial... If you upload sprites with these shadows, either WBG them or have the background the same color as dA because the shadows don't look as good against a white background... Don't forget to save as a .PNG!

Comment, fave, ask questions, show me what you made, and whatever you can do that's related to this tutorial.

Okay, on the side where you have your tool bar, look below all of the tools and you should see this thing here:

[link]

The one I'm pointing to should have a blue background if you have Vista (meaning it's selected). What this means is that what ever is selected inside the box will be transparent, like you want. When you have it selected on the box above it, whatever you select inside that box and move it (aka a moving a sprite), you will move the background around it with it.

So yeah, just select the one I circled in the link, and you should be okay. I hope that made sense ^^;

Can you give me an example of a shadow you've made? If I see one maybe I can figure out how to fix it and your box :s

Okay, I see the problem. What you're doing is that you're inputing a number in both parts of the "Skew" box. You don't need to do that. Leave the "Skew - Vertical" box at 0, and change the 100 "Resize - Vertical" box to a smaller number, like 50 or something. That should make your shadows look more like the ones in my tutorial.

Well, Musharna's a levitating Pokemon, so you'll want to the same thing I did to my Ho-oh sprite in the tutorial ^^

thnx dude...this will help me with my spriting, i like these shadows better...

ive got a question, for pokemon that swim (remoraid, kyogre for example) do i just do as you do with flying/levitating pokemon or is there a little bit more to swimming pokemon?
Reply
:iconxxsapphiregalexx:
xXSapphireGaleXx Featured By Owner Sep 12, 2010  Hobbyist Digital Artist
Well, the games have swimming Pokemon levitating like flying Pokemon, so you'll want to treat them like flying Pokemon for the shadows... but I think you might want to keep the shadow more underneath the Pokemon, and maybe not as stretched as the ones in my tut (maybe put a number between 0-10 in the Skew-Horizontal Box instead of my 50). I haven't done a swimming Pokemon yet, so I don't know what that'd look like for sure ^^;

Lol at first when it said "shadows", I thought you meant shading. So I was looking at the Dialga sprites, wondering that was different about the shading xD I didn't even notice the shadows

Great tutorial, btw! :D
